L’università Sapienza di Roma è orgogliosa di partecipare al Gruppo di Atenei creato dal Congresso USA per stimolare ricerche nelle Facoltà e nei Dipartimenti di Ingegneria sul tema delle “Grandi Sfide che si trova ad affrontare l’Umanità”. Nel Gruppo sono state già ammesse 55 Università statunitensi e 8 al di fuori degli USA (2 in Australia e 6 in Asia, tra Cina, Hong Kong e Singapore).
Il Premio per studenti e dottorandi NAE GCSP viene promosso dalla National Academy of Science (Washington) ed è descritto sul sito di riferimento – Grand Challenges Scholars Program della National Academy http://www.engineeringchallenges.org/challenges.aspx .
Il giorno 3 dicembre 2018 presso la facoltà di Ingegneria dell’Università in Via Eudossiana 18, la sala del Consiglio della Presidenza ospiterà la presentazione del Grand Challenge Scholars Program insieme alle proposte di Attività nazionali ed internazionali rivolte a Studenti, Dottorandi, con US National Academy of Sciences Ambassador: Prof Theodore Endreny.
Per l’Italia, il prof. Endreny, d’intesa con l’Ambasciata USA, ha promosso incontri in varie città per facilitare il coinvolgimento delle Università. Il giro del Professor Endreny passerà per varie città di Italia, ed il 5 Dicembre sarà a Roma presso l’Ambasciata USA, per il debriefing finale.

Cosa è il NAE-GCSP: Nel corso del Gran Challenges Summit 2018, da poco concluso a Washington, la National Academy ha ratificato l’adesione da parte della Facoltà di Ingegneria di Sapienza Università di Roma. L’auspicio è che molte altre università italiane aderiscano con i loro Dipartimenti, Facoltà e Scuole di tematica affini al Programma.
Lanciato negli USA nel 2008, il Grand Challenges Scholars Program intende accrescere, negli studenti e nei ricercatori, la sensibilità per progetti di concreto impatto sociale ed economico.
Vengono, infatti, premiate con un “riconoscimento” denominato GCSP Award, le proposte di innovazione e trasferimento tecnologico con maggiore impatto economico e sociale, che facciano da“ponte” tra diversi Paesi e culture.
- Competenza Tecnico Progettuale – Creativa: esperienza progettuale su un argomento vicino ad una grande problematica del XXI secolo;
- Competenza Multidisciplinare: comprensione della multidisciplinarietà delle soluzioni di sistemi ingegneristici sviluppate attraverso l’impegno personale dello studente;
- Competenza Economica – Imprenditoriale: comprensione, preferibilmente sviluppata attraverso l’esperienza diretta, della necessità di un modello di business realizzabile per l’implementazione dellasoluzione;
- Competenza Multiculturale: da acquisire preferibilmente attraverso esperienze dirette, per garantire la mutua accettazione culturale delle soluzioni ingegneristiche proposte;
- Competenza di Consapevolezza Sociale: riflessione sull’opportunità che le soluzioni ingegneristiche giovino principalmente alle persone e alla società, riflettendosi sulla coscienza sociale.

NAE – Grand Challenges Scholars Program
Proposals for national and international activities from
US National Academy of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine
Italian Universities are the first in Europe to be invited at participating in the University Group created by the US Congress to stimulate research in the Faculties and Engineering Departments on the theme of “Grand Challenges of Humanity”. The Group has already admitted 55 US Universities and 8 from outside the US (2 in Australia and 6 in Asia, including China, Hong Kong and Singapore).
For Italy, Prof. Endreny, in agreement with the US Embassy, has promoted meetings in various cities to facilitate the involvement of Italian Universities.

What is the NAE-GCSP: During the Great Challenges Summit 2018, recently concluded in Washington, the National Academy ratified the membership by the Faculty of Engineering Sapienza University of Rome. The hope is that many other Italian universities will join with their Departments, Faculties and Schools related to the Program.
Launched in the US in 2008, the Grand Challenges Scholars Program intends to increase the sensitivity for projects of concrete social and economic impact in students and researchers.
In fact, they are rewarded with a “recognition” called the GCSP Award, the proposals for innovation and technology transfer with greater economic and social impact, which act as a “bridge” between different countries and cultures, especially through 5 competencies:
- Design – Creative Technical Skills: design experience on a topic close to a major problem of the 21st century;
- Multidisciplinary competence: understanding of the multidisciplinarity of the solutions of engineering systems developed through the student’s personal commitment;
- Economic Competence – Entrepreneurial: understanding, preferably developed through direct experience, of the need for a feasible business model for the implementation of the evolution;
- Multicultural competence: to be acquired preferably through direct experience, to guarantee the mutual cultural acceptance of the proposed engineering solutions;
- Competence of Social Awareness: reflection on the appropriateness that engineering solutions mainly benefit people and society, reflecting on social conscience.
